The Plan

Even though we haven't painted a single wall in the nursery, my plans for it continue to grow. Over the past few months, my ideas have shifted back and forth at breakneck speed. Originally, I wanted a Care Bear theme, and then it switched to a retro/Dick and Jane theme. There were a couple other themes that I thought of and, while none of them "fit", the themes all had a theme within them. And that theme was my childhood.

I have always been a "saver". Not neccessarily a pack rat, just a saver of mementos that were important to me. And I'm glad I've hung onto them because a lot of those things will now be in Baby's room. While the colour scheme will be pink and chocolate brown, the theme will be "Childhood".

On the walls will be a blown up baby photo of Mike and one of myself. On the shelves will be my stuffed animals from when I was little, my favourite Care Bear books, some Dick and Jane books (which was how I learned to read) and the first doll I ever got. Mike's baby shoes will be on one shelf, mine on another. The two knick knacks that were on my night table when we first moved to P.A. will now be on Baby's night table. Hanging off one shelf will be a small, pink dress I wore for my first birthday photo shoot.

Tomorrow, I finally get to start painting the walls. The crib and change table/dresser have been ordered (fingers crossed they show up in the next few weeks!). I'm not buying a complete bedding set - why bother when you can't use the crib bumpers for safety reasons and Baby isn't going to use the quilt to cover up with? Plus, the crib we are buying has a flat back that wouldn't even allow a bumper to be tied to it. Instead, I'm just going to buy a couple of sheets and Mom will make Baby a blanket and crib skirt.

I keep thinking we have plenty of time left to get the nursery done, but eight weeks really isn't that much time. But I'm not going to freak out if the nursery isn't finished before Baby arrives. She's so small, we could set her down anywhere...the bookshelf, the kitchen cupboard...and she'd be fine to sleep there :-)

  1. The childhood theme sounds great! I'm a saver of mementos too, and I have a lot of books and toys from when I was young that my daughter now reads/plays with. My mom saved a lot of my baby clothes too, and my daughter has worn them as well!

    Happy decorating!

  2. I am not a saver, I am not good at saving things or picking out important things to save....but I am going to try to save special things for Carys. Your baby room soungs great! I like the color choices.
