Oops, I Did It Again

Well, my sister and nephews returned home to Germany this morning so I guess that means my summer is officially over :-)  It was a fantastic two weeks filled with tons of laughing, many wonderful suppers together and lots of great chats.  Katelyn was adored by all the family who finally got a chance to meet her.  She is becoming such a little goofball.

The only downside to my time at the cabin is that I have apparently started an unfortunate tradition.  Some of you may remember last summer when I fell through the deck at the lake.  Can you guess what I'm going to say next?  That's right - I fell again and banged up both my legs and my elbow.  Stupid is as stupid does, I suppose.

I was taking Shandi outside to pee before I went to bed.  Since it was raining, I put her on a leash.  This way, I could stand under the eaves and let Shandi amble out into the wet night alone.  As I stepped off the stair, I was looking up at the eaves to make sure there was enough coverage.  I failed to notice the small trench my dad had dug while the new cabin addition was being built.  Next thing I knew, I was face down in the gravel.  I'm still in awe at how quickly I fell - it's like there was no in between.  I just went from standing to laid out in a split second.

My sister (who is studying medicine in Germany) was just as shocked as I was at my very short but quite impressive spontaneous gymnastics routine.  In the confusion/excitement, she began yelling instructions at me to stay down while in the next breath telling me to grab her arm.  Both of us were praying we weren't about to get a sneak peek at the inside of my shin.  When I was able to stand, I was covered in dirt from knee to ankle on both legs.  I had gravel embedded in my right leg and a bunch of scrapes on my left leg (from where it had dragged along the edge of the strairs).  I also had an elbow and palm filled with gravel.

Once we realized we were only dealing with blood and bruises, we were able to relax and actually laugh about it.  My sis did a wonderful job of cleaning up my wounds and applying various solutions to clean the wounds and ointments to help the swelling go down (my left shin took the brunt of the injuries).  I was teasing her that in the moment of panic, all her medical training flew out of her head and that I wouldn't have been surprised if she'd yelled, "Just lay down and stay calm!  Mouth to mouth is a lot easier if you don't struggle!".

I think for my last day at the lake next year, I'm just going to sit in the car :-)
