Happy Birthday, Mr. Bubbaloo!

Dear Andrew:

This past Friday, you turned the big ol' two.  I'll throw in the cliche "Where does the time go?" because it's honestly what I'm thinking...time just seems to have flown by.  One minute, you're a squiggly, wiggly newborn and all of a sudden you're a little boy with loads of personality and developing your independence.

The day you were born was one of the coolest days of my life...in the moment, I hated the labour, but the instant you were out, I could have done cartwheels down the hall and was ready to do it all over again.  You came so fast and furiously that there was no time for an epidural so this mama had to grin and bear down.  That was the most pain I had ever felt but you were totally worth every uncomfortable contraction :)

You have grown into such an enigma of a little boy.  One moment, you are sweet and gentle and playing with your cars.  The next, you are banging your head on the floor because your sister took one of said cars away.  When you are tired, you are TIRED and let the world know it!  When you are hungry, you are HUNGRY NOW and, again, you let the world know it.  Unlike your sister, you are an awesome eater and are game to try anything and everything.

Your speech has yet to develop and this has caused your mama much stress.  I know boys tend to develop later than girls, but by this age, you should be saying something.  You say nothing.  You've got your little babbling that you do, but you have yet to spit out a "mama", "dada", or even a "hi!".  We're getting your ears checked just to make sure your hearing is okay.  We're also getting you tested for autism (mama's already done freaking out about this one...it will be what it will be), since you scored as high risk on the autism marker scale.  Whatever the results are, you are still my Baby Boy and it won't change how fiercely I love you!

You bring so much joy to our day...between the way you scoot sideways around the corners or the way you lovingly share your food with us, you are the littlest apple of our eyes.  You love playing with your sister (and pulling her hair!) and would follow her anywhere.  The two of you would jump on her bed for hours if I let you.  You love going for walks and natter away about whatever is going on inside that beautiful little mind of yours.  You love to share things you have found...from sticks and rocks to flowers and dog poop.

Maybe it's because you aren't talking that you still seem so much a baby to me.  You still drink from your "baba" in the mornings, you're still sleeping in your crib (fingers crossed you don't figure out how to climb out!), and you still let me cuddle you to put you to sleep.  And, of course, there's your "soo-soo"...you are never without your soother...something mama is going to make you cut ties with very soon...we shall see how that goes.

So, my darling baby boy...here's wishing you a wonderful year full of learning, growth, play, laughter and love!

Love, Mama
