I bought new fish on Wednesday...twelve of them to be exact. Three of these new fish were mollies. I was told by the Petland Ranger to expect that the mollies would breed, so I bought all the neccessary paraphenalia (just in case). The Ranger failed to mention two things...when the molly would give birth and how many babies it would have. Last night, around 1 am, I went to turn off the tank light. The fish were all hovering near the top, so I decided to feed them one more time. After sprinkling the food, I plopped myself down on the floor to watch them eat. The tank light was the only light on in the house, so it gave off wonderful ambience (I love just sitting and watching the tank - soooo relaxing!).
All of a sudden, at the back of the tank I spied a wee, little minnow. Then I spied two more at the bottom, hiding in the plants. I phoned Mike at work and shouted, "We've got babies!!". It took me over an hour to set up the miniature, mesh tank inside the larger tank and scoop out the babies. I destroyed the layout of our tank in the meantime. I uprooted our plants, turned over the cave hide-out and knocked over the Parthenon. It's a wonder I didn't kill any other fish in the process. In the end, I could only find four babies, who are now safely protected in their own area. When they've grown to an acceptable size, I will give them back to Petland (for free). Not a bad deal for Petland.
