Looking for Mary Poppins

Joel's monthly newsletter came home yesterday and as I skimmed through it, I came across a small blurb announcing that as of August 2008, the school day was going to be condensed. Classes will begin ten minutes earlier, recesses will be shortened by five minutes and the lunch hour by fifteen minutes, thus allowing the school day to end at 3:00pm. I would like to know if I'm the only parent upset by this.

As it stands now, Joel gets home by 3:40pm. On the odd days when Mike is working an afternoon shift, my boss has been gracious enough to let me slip out of work early (I'm supposed to stay until 4:00pm) to get home to get Joel off the bus. I would never be brazen enough to ask if I could leave at 3:00pm. Mike and I are now in a kerfuffle as to what we're going to do come fall. When we've tried to find baby-sitters in the past, as soon as we mention "special needs", one of two things happen - either the person doubles their asking rate or they decline all together. Granted, this was years ago when Joel could barely speak.

So, I don't know what our options are for the fall. Colby doesn't get home from school until 3:45, so we can't rely on him. Mike's mom works until 4:30 and we're not about to ask her to leave an hour and a half early on those days. My parents have trips lined up for most of next winter so we can count them out. Does anyone out there have a direct line to Mary Poppins? She would sure come in handy. I guess we'll start by sending out flyers in our neighbourhood, looking for a high school student who's interested in Special Education and has a spare in fifth period. No heavy lifting required, but knowledge of movies is a must.
