Mike often complains to me that I can't hear him. For a long time, I questioned whether I was going deaf or if I was hard of hearing because I couldn't/can't understand some people when they talk. If I am on the phone, there has to be zero background noise or else I'm totally lost. And I mean zero background noise. No TV. No radio. No people in the room talking. I need dead silence. And even then, it's tough for me to hear because I can't see the speaker's lips. I used to be quite good at lip reading. And I finally discovered the reason why I can't hear. It's because I hear everything. Make sense?
I first clued in to the fact I may have super hearing when I noticed that the high-pitched buzz of TVs drive me nuts. In the mornings, I can hear Colby's TV the second he turns it on...and the volume is muted. When Mike shuts off the PS3 downstairs, he sometimes forgets to turn off the TV (because the screen goes black when the game console is shut off). I can hear the pitch of the TV if I'm standing on the back landing. The ability to hear this pitch (when everyone else claims they can't) led me to the conclusion that I have above average hearing. I then realized that the reason I hear nothing is because I can hear everything.
I can totally relate to what you're saying. It goes the same for me ! But i have no problem hearing ppl on the telephon, it's just when i try to concentrate at work, i have to put some music on so that i don't hear all the other little noises. Ppl often tell me i should go see a doctor but they don't understand that it's not about hearing nothig but EVERYTHING !

Hi so,
ReplyDeleteI linked over to your blog but, alas, I cannot read French! Is there anyway I can translate it to English?
