One Year And One Week Ago

June 24th was the one year anniversary of Shandi coming into our lives. Prior to that day, we had non-chalantly discussed getting a dog, but never very seriously. On the afternoon of the 24th, the boys were at their mom's house, Mike was napping in bed and I was reading "Chicken Soup For The Dog Lover's Soul". To put it succinctly, I was bawling my head off. After about a half hour of crying, I went into the bedroom, gave Mike a few pokes in the side and said, "Get up. I want to go get a dog".

We went down to the S.P.C.A. with the intentions of only looking. We knew that we needed a small dog that wouldn't bark very much. The first dog we looked at was a little, hyper terrier that was yipping and jumping all over the place. While she was cute, she was a little too active. We put her back in the cage and continued to wander down the row of cages. We came to one cage that had a slightly chubby, short legged, black and white dog. She was cowering in the corner of her cage and she refused to make eye contact with us. She kept her face pointed away from us, but held her eyes in our general direction. I fell in love instantly. Shandi came home with us that day.
