My Happy Place

The purging and cleaning continued this weekend. I have now begun to purge again and doing a second run-through of everything. I may not rest until we have nothing left in our house! In a fit of cleaning, I'll probably end up ripping Mike's shirt off and throwing it in the donation pile! If this isn't nesting, Lord help me when it actually hits :-)

My favourite place in our house has become our bedroom. For far too long, the master bedroom was neglected. We had a double mattress with no headboard, mismatched sheets and comforters, hand-me-down dressers and no real decor. We used our wedding money from my parents and grandparents to buy our bedroom suite and dining room set. We were married shortly before we bought this house, so we waited until we moved in before we set everything up.

For the past two years, our bedroom became a sort of "catch-all" room where we would just dump things...receipts, papers, books, magazines, and just other stuff that didn't really have a home. The closet took the brunt of it since I could just chuck things in and slide the door closed. I purged through the closet and bathroom again this weekend and I am finally at peace with the way things look. When I walk into our room, I feel nothing but calm. The bathroom is cleaned and rid of excess junk I don't use. My closet (while it still looks full) is organized. And my dresser has become a "pretty place" with my special items on it.

Our master closet: my new shoe rack hangs on the left hand side, purses are sorted on the top shelf, and the dirty laundry basket is on the bench. While the shelves in the middle may look messy, each cubby does have a purpose.

Our work uniforms hang on the right side of the closet, so as not to contaminate the rest of our clothes :-)

My bathroom is finally rid of unused lotions, perfumes etc. Only the items I use on a regular basis are on the counter top.

The space saver behind the toilet finally looks calm and uncluttered. All my "spa" goodies and perfumes are held behind the little doors.

My dresser. From left to right is: our little wedding album, a wedding pic of me that I photoshopped, another wedding photo, the gift Mike sent me on our wedding morning, a french vanilla candle (in the pink tin), a hand blown vase from Germany that my sister sent me for my grade 12 graduation, my jewelry box, a glass doll that was on my night table when I was a little girl, and an anniversary card from Mike a few years ago (but it sums up our relationship perfectly!).

  1. Jyl, as I had the occasion to tell you before, I am on the same wave of home-decluttering!!!!
I like to see more details of your place! I especially liked to see your dressing table and bathroom with the things you use... Could you post a photo where the things you use are more visible...I am so curious to see your make up basket...I have a similar one!

  2. I really enjoyed that post. I love when things are organized and cleaned. I think Kate Gosselin (Jon & Kate Plus 8) sums it up best when she said, "An organized space is an organized mind and an organized life".

  3. Yes! I think I am going to print that saying off and hang it on the fridge.
I have a series of sayings in the bathroom that read:
    "Cleanse The Body"
    "Soothe The Soul"
    "Quiet The Mind"
    "Rejuvinate The Spirit"

I'm thinking that's part of the reason I've been on a spa/purge kick lately. It's all about how those things make me feel...and those things make me feel great!
