Do You Twat?

Wait...I don't think that's right. Do you twit? Twoot? Twet?

I'll be honest - I don't quite understand the whole Twittering phenomenon. But lately it seems like I'm hearing/seeing about it everywhere. One of my favourite celeb gossip blogs posted links to a bunch of celebrity Twitter pages. Just yesterday, I discovered the video that is at the bottom of the post and then today on John Gormley, he was echoing my exact sentiments.

I only listened to the first few minutes of Gormley's show, but I caught him asking what the point of Twitter was all about (just for the record, 650 News Talk has a Twitter page). He asked why there was this need to let everyone else know what you are doing. all. the. time.

In my eyes, Twitter is no different than a Facebook status, except you have an entire page devoted to it. But at least on Facebook, you can send messages, instant chat, look at photos etcetera, etcetera. I understand that we live in a world where, for some odd reason, we feel a need to stay connected, but why do we feel that we have to share EVERYTHING about ourselves (so says the girl with blog - ironic, I know right?). Why do we feel the need to express every thought that goes through our head? Even when those thoughts are about what you just ate and how your gut is now paying for it to how you wished for a unicorn when you were little but, alas, never got one.

I know there are some pretty silly Facebook status updates out there and I've added a few of my own. But, again, there are 8 million other things to do on Facebook than just type your thoughts and comment on other people's thoughts. Maybe that's what gets to me about Twitter...I've checked out a few pages and large portions of the tweets are responses back to other Twittererererers and you have no idea what they are talking about. It's like hanging out with two people who have all their own inside jokes and you're left standing there, trying to giggle along but you have no idea what the joke is all about.

I don't not like Twitter - I just don't get what the rave is all about. But I do know that I like the following little video...the mindless Twittererererers and their mundane thoughts had me laughing (especially the sublime unagi one).

  1. I'm on twitter...I really don't know why. I was sucked in. But I've geeked things up and made it so that I can type a twitter update into my firefox address bar and it updates my twitter status AND my facebook status. Neat huh?

    I'm such a dork...

  2. About three weeks ago I created a Twitter account just out of curiosity... Well, I completely agree with what you say! I mean, where is the point of writing so much about you? So far I have never edited a single word on T. and I don't think I will do.
