Fast forward to this afternoon.
I decided I really did want to see his show and to take Katelyn with me. You see, during each of Stuart's shows, he takes a break from his story telling to interact with the audience. He finds out who the oldest person in the audience is and who's the youngest. Those people win a free book or CD. At the Christmas show, the youngest person in the audience was a two month old baby. Right then and there I started plotting that Katelyn would win me that book at his next show.
The only thing standing in our way today was the fact that it was 4:00pm and I didn't have a ticket (Mike was going to stay home with Joel so it's just a girls night out). I zoomed down to the ticket office in hopes that there was an aisle seat open somewhere (so Katelyn's car seat can sit on the aisle). The only seats left were in the balcony, at the very back. When the woman behind me heard that I wanted only one ticket, she piped up with her story. She said she was there to pick up her tickets but didn't need the extra ticket since her friend went into hospital over the weekend. I asked whether one of the seats was on an aisle and she said she didn't know. The ticket lady looked up the seats and, sure enough, they were at the end of the FOURTH row on the lower level! I promptly bought the woman's ticket, introduced myself and said that I look forward to our date tonight.
I just shake my head at how things work out for me sometimes. If I had decided earlier in the day to go get tickets, that woman wouldn't have been there. If SHE had decided to pick up her tickets earlier, I wouldn't have been there. I never did mention to her that I would be bringing a baby along, but I'm positive Katelyn will sleep through the entire show. If she does decide to wake up, I will spend the show out in the lobby. But we're definitely sticking around after the show to have Katelyn's picture taken with Stuart!!
Update: Katelyn was a rockstar throughout the show! She slept in my arms right until intermission. Just as I predicted, she was the youngest person in the audience. There were a couple of, "Oh wow!"s when I said she was only seven weeks old (to which Stuart promptly called out, "Do I hear six weeks? Any six week olds in the audience? Going once?"). We won a lovely Stuart McLean CD!
Katelyn slept through the first half of the show. She woke up during intermission, but I can't blame her since she was being passed around from grandma to grandma that came over to oogle her. There were quite a few people in the audience that I knew that came over to offer their congrats. It's funny how babies draw women to them like moths to a flame. After intermission, Katelyn hammered a bottle and then quietly sat and made eyes at the women behind us.
And, apparently, no Stuart McLean show can be complete without me crying. At the end of the show, the musical guests came back out and they, along with Stuart, lead the audience in a lovely version of "You Are My Sunshine". As I swayed back and forth with Katelyn snuggled up to my chest, I quietly sang into the sweet-smelling part of the back of her neck and I cried. She is my sunshine.
Wow! What a great story! Hope the girls night is great. I'll try to give you a call after my class tomorrow to find out how it went and to explain more of why I needed your book sent another province away. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome to keep the book for as long as you need it. Don't send it back in the mail...just bring it with you this Sunday when you come over for Oscar night :-)
ReplyDeleteHooray! Hooray! And is that the sweater I gave her too?
ReplyDeleteIt is the sweater! She would have worn the onesie that went with it, but I wanted to layer her up a little more. Don't we sort of look like a family? Oh Stuart...I do love you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a FANTASTIC story - start to finish! Love the pic :)
