I Ought To Explain

After Nicole commented on the last post that you have to know Joel to appreciate the video, I thought to myself, "Holy hell...I guess it does need a bit more of an explanation!".

Joel has a great sense of humour and, if I do say so myself, he gets it from me. When I interact with him, I am very dry, very sarcastic and I am constantly pulling his leg. He's never quite sure when I'm bullshitting him or when I'm telling the truth. If Joel hears Mike go outside (say, to take the garbage out), Joel will ask where he's going. I will tell Joel something like, "Daddy is tired of having a family to take care of and is running away to join the circus".

Joel also LOVES to be scared. If we hear a noise outside, we immediately suspect that it's Freddy Krueger coming to kill us. We tell each other to be quiet and, in our desperation to hush the other person, our attempts turn into a full-on shushing match that gets louder and louder until one of us yells, "I win! You lose!".

When Joel feels safe, he likes the unexpected. Like if we're sitting and watching TV and there's a commercial with dramatic music, right when the music reaches the apex/climax, I'll reach out and slam my hand on Joel's table to startle him. This may sound mean, but Joel's reaction is to scream and then erupt into a fit of giggles.

And so, with yesterday's video, Joel was (obviously) fully aware that it was me singing and, even though it was the first take, I've done enough silly things (like jumping out of closets to spook him), he knew what to expect. Just in case you couldn't tell, Joel was laughing at the end of the video.

Please don't phone child services.

  1. I had to watch the video again just for a good laugh. Giggling Joel always makes me giggle. Then I had a good laugh at your singing voice...you start off so serious, lol. :-)

  2. LOL...Even though Joel knew what was coming, I had to start off serious or else he would have been busting a gut as soon as the words were out of my mouth!
