I Figured It Was Time...

The first one I ever had was in 2007. I had just about a year's break before the next one came along. Then, I was able to make it through 2009 and 2010 without having any.  The episode last night made up for skipping two years.  Yes, it was time for one of my migraine episodes.

I'm assuming migraines vary from person to person.  I know a woman on FB that posts while apparently suffering from a migraine.  The first thing that comes to mind is, "How the eff can you be sitting up and typing while having a migraine?!?".  But, if it's the worst headache she's ever experienced, then I suppose that's what a migraine is to her.  My migraines? They are much, much different.

I was getting ready for bed around 11:00 when I noticed I had a slight headache on the right side of my head.  Whenever the pain is concentrated on that side, my first thought is always, "Geez, I hope it's not a migraine".  Little did I know what the next few hours had in store for me.  The pain began to rapidly increase and by 11:45, I was laying in bed with a bag of frozen peas on my head in a vain attempt to lessen the pain.  I tried switching positions so I could lay on my face and keep as much pressure on my face/head as possible.  I tried sitting up.  Nothing was working.

By 1:00am, I was sitting up in bed, rocking back and forth and moaning.  It honestly felt like contractions and that I had to breath through them.  Mike was downstairs and wouldn't have heard my pathetic cries, even if I had tried.  When he finally did come upstairs, he found me sobbing on the bathroom floor, my face pressed against the toilet seat.  I was in the midst of puking.  The crying only made the headache worse, but it also made me feel better.  It was like it was a release for the pain.

With cold cloths on my neck and face, Mike helped me back into bed.  I felt minutely better and thought I would be able to sleep, but my head had other plans.  Within a half hour, I was back in the bathroom, puking my guts out and, more or less, making my deals with God to let me live.  I vaguely remember making a promise that, after I had my next baby, I would personally end world hunger by breastfeeding everybody or something like that.  When my stomach was empty, Mike once again led me back to bed.  He laid in bed with me and kept pressure on the right side of my face.  I was finally able to fall asleep.

This morning, I sit with a cold cloth pressed against my face in the hope it will dissipate the final remnants of this headache. I am thankful the pain has been downgraded from "Dear God, save me!" to "I need more water and some Tylenol, but I think I'll be okay".

What I am not thankful for is the fact that whenever I throw up, I blow all the blood vessels in my face.  Maybe this afternoon, Kat can play connect-the-dots with the 8000 red marks covering my pale face.

  1. I feel for you! Is there any prescribed pain medication you could take? I get occular migraines, which start with me starting to see spots in front of my eyes, if I try to fight it & ignore the spots, it makes the headache worse. I have to try and lie down in the dark & quiet before it worsens.

    Feel better soon!

  2. Migraines BLOW!! Sometimes when they start I figure I will be ok but soon I am paralyzed with pain. Most of mine happen during the night but I have seen an increase of daytime ones. Having to manage with 2 kids makes it a million times worse. I usually end up vomiting, lying on my bathroom floor and begging to die. I have prescription pills now that help a lot but before that I used Mersyndol which otc and that helped a bit. I did find it to be a bit addicting so you have to be careful with it. I read that if you take one low dose asprin a day that it will cut down on migraines so I have been doing that and it has seemed to help - knock on wood. I also tried accupuncture but that actually made me throw up and gave me a migraine. And then to make things worse, once the pain in my head goes away, I am nauseas for like 2 days. They suck so much I wouldn't wish it on anybody.

Hope you are feeling better soon! I am feeling your pain all the way here in Calgary!!

  4. A pet peeve of mine is people who call bad headaches migraines. As you have explained, migraines are much different with numerous other symptoms than a typical headache.

I hope you feel better soon! That sounds awful :(

  6. Nikki: Do you mean me? Heck no! And I don't think there's anything you said that would offend any of the other commenters! I haven't looked into any prescription meds because they are few and far between.

Becky: If I never have another one in my life, it will be too soon! I can't imagine having several of these in a month/year!

Carmen: Count your lucky stars that you never experience one :)

Angie: I'm with you on that pet peeve!

  7. That's horrible! I actually got so many migranes last year (no idea why) that I had to leave school. Sucks to be lame.

But finally, one doctor gave me Imitrex (sumatriptan if you get the no-namers like me) and it actually helped! You take it when you feel the start of a migrane and it'll literally stop it in its tracks! It's MIRACULOUS!!!

You should get one, and the next time you feel a migrane stalking you, take it and see if it helps. I hope it does. It's no fun being that ill and having little ones to take care of. Scratch that: it's no fun being that ill and having to do anything (like sit or blink).

  8. Jyl - I feel for you. I have had a continual headache since 1993. YES I know people will think I am exaggerating (sp) but I have had a headache to some degree ever since starting work in my previous position (which you know where that was) The neurologist believes it stems from having the phone cradled between my ear and my neck while entering data non stop. Some days I don't notice it but it is still there and some days it is like the one you described. It was like that one yesterday, Wedneday and Tuesday. The one treatment that does work and which I get every 3-4 months is botox injections (helps with wrinkles too). My wonderful neurologist, Dr. Voll does them. They are expensive but luckily my husband's plan covers them. Perhaps they would work for you too? Good luck.

  9. Cheryl...I honestly don't know what I would do if I was in your position. I cannot imagine having a constant headache! It was literally torture to go through and I am thankful that, although mine appear to be "regular", at least there is a year's reprieve between them!

If mine start to happen closer together, I will definitely consider the botox :)
