My Favourite Things

I have my certain favourite go-to items that that I come back to, time and time again.  If someone held a gun to my head and forced me to choose only three things to take with me to a deserted island, I'd be hard pressed to pick only three.  In no particular order, here are my current favourite things:

Ice strips - I don't know what the proper name for these things are, but they're basically ice gel except in big ass bandaid form.  Instead of rubbing ice gel all over my lower back or shoulder, I peel the plastic protective cover off one of these bad boys and I have instant cooling relief that lasts for a couple of hours.  I use them on my back, my calves, my neck - basically anywhere that is sore.  Somedays, I wish they made a Snugglie sized ice strip...you know, those days when it feels like you're ninety and fell down a flight of stairs?

Baby Oxi-Clean This stuff is pure gold.  I started using it when Miss K was born and I will likely use it for the rest of my life.  Even after my babies are no longer babies.  It doesn't matter what gets spilled on their clothes - ketchup, butter, red wine grape juice - it ALL comes out.  The trick is getting to the stain as soon as possible.  I've been known to rip K's shirt right off her back, mid bite, so I can throw it in the sink and let the magic start working.  I'm proud to say that every single piece of my children's clothing is completely stain free - and that includes all the spitting up that Mr. Bubbaloo does!

Highlighters Because I am starting to feel closer to the me-I'm-supposed-to-be, I've begun (began? beginned?) to organize the shit out of everything in my near vicinity.  There are baskets for everything, mini file folders for all our loose paper, binders for favourite recipes, binders for instruction booklets and manuals that have no where to go...it's been kind of insane around here these last two months.  But out of all the organizing gear I have purchased (including a label maker!), no item is more important than my trusty highlighter(s).  Our life has finally hit that point that we need to colour code our calendar and I love it.  But it's not just the calendar that gets to be prettied up...all of my lists get lighted up as well.  Daily task lists, weekly cleaning schedules, yearly project goals, monthly bill paying - all pretty with their neon greens, pinks and yellows.  My addiction to highlighters goes so far as when I needed one single purple, but was having trouble finding an individual one, I bought a pack of ten mixed colours (nine of which I already had) just so I could have the elusive purple one :)

White Chocolate Mocha Coffee Cream I've never really been a fan of flavoured coffee creamers.  I've always just stuck with my trusty 10% and have never had much desire to stray too far from it.  Awhile back, Mike came home with a Chocolate Mint coffee cream.  He loved it, but I turned my nose up at it.  The next time I was getting groceries, as I was reaching for Mike's cream, I spied the White Chocolate Mocha.  Because I like to live life on the edge, I figured, "What the hell? Why not?" and scooped a bottle for myself.  Now?  My morning coffee is mostly white chocolate mocha cream with just a splash of coffee.  This shit is AWE-some.  For reals.

Tim Horton's Coffee For over a year, Mike and I broke away from Timmie's and switched over to McDonald's coffee.  I think it was during one of McD's free coffee promotions when we got hooked.  And then Mike discovered McD's mochas and was completely addicted.  He was drinking almost one a day for quite a stretch and at $3.77 a pop, that starts to add up.  Initially, Mike would bring me home a coffee from there as well, but I found I wasn't enjoying them as much.  A few weeks ago, I was heading home from shopping and wanted a coffee.  The line-up at McD's was too long for my liking (there must have been at least one car in line and I don't have the patience for that shit), so I decided to stop at Timmie's.  I'm pretty sure I've chugged a Timmie's a day for the last few weeks.  I swear they put just a pinch of heroin in there to keep you coming back for more.

Duck Tape Not duct tape, but Duck Tape.  It's like duct tape, only it comes in every colour and pattern imaginable.  When I first saw it, I thought, "Seriously? What handy man is going to duct tape some pipes with hot pink zebra tape?".  And then I realized it's more for crafty things than it is for fixing things.  And, just like Timmie's, I am completely addicted to it.  I have wrapped empty formula containers with it (I needed something fancy to organize all our batteries).  My cash box for my business is a fantastic looking zebra print, instead of the boring old gun-metal grey.  I took one of those Scooby Doo buckets that McDonald's was handing out as shitty Happy Meal toys during Halloween and covered it in a penguin themed tape.  That bucket now holds Mr. Bubbaloo's face and penis creams (don't want to mix those two up!) next to his diapers.  I am saving our old cereal boxes that I will eventually cut in half (length wise) and cover in duck tape to use as dresser drawer organizers.  Seriously...this tape has endless possibilities.

Voice to Text I was beyond excited to discover that both my iPhone and iMac have voice-to-text features (please remember that I'm new to the world of smartphones).  I love the fact that I can give commands to my phone while my hands are tied up feeding Bubbaloo or strangling Miss K (seriously...what is with the attitudes of three year olds? Terrible twos, my ass! Three is a horrible age!).  I can stand in front of my fridge or pantry and dictate my entire shopping list into the phone...no more spending time writing out a lengthy list, only to leave it sitting on the counter at home!  The one drawback with voice-to-text is that it captures everything you say.  I've had more than a few grocery lists that looked like this:

eggs
milks
yogurt
apple juice
For-the-love-of-god-K-get-off-of-there!
oranges
bananas
I-mean-it!
bread
hamburger
peanut butter
I'm-counting-to-three!
diapers
wipes
If-you-would-have-listened-now-we-wouldn't-be-on-our-way-to-the-hospital-to-get-stitches
cheese slices

Happy Monday, everybody :) Enjoy the week!
