Shandi was abused before she came into our home. We went to the SPCA last June and barely noticed her because she was cowering in the back of her cage, absolutely terrified and not making any eye contact. I fell in love with her right away! She has done an amazing job of coming out of her shell over the past eight months. That being said, she is still very skiddish and leary of pretty much anything that moves. When she is afraid, she either starts to rock back and forth and lick her lips or else she turns her head slightly and, honestly, she squints her eyes like she's readying to take a kick or punch. So, so sad...
Over these eight months, we have started to joke about all the different things that Shandi must have been beaten with because she shows signs of fear when she sees us holding or using them. Here is a list of things my dog has apparently been beaten with:
- shovels
- electrical cords
- rolls of paper towel
- rolls of wrapping paper
- diapers
- the fleece belt from a house coat
- socks
- grocery bags
- garden hoses
- balloons
- fishing rods
- ladders
- violins
- Christmas trees
- Christmas lights
- laundry baskets
- cat litter boxes
- tape measures
- 4 ft. cedars
- VCRs
- frying pans
- shower curtains
- movie posters
- fish stands
- TV remotes
- 8 X 10 picture frames
- floor registers
- paint brushes
- lamp shades
And, finally, if last night at agility class is any indication, evidently Shandi has also been beaten with hurdles and large, yellow, plastic tunnels.
