I never, ever thought I would become a Twi-hard (for those less informed, that's a die-hard Twilight fan). I've never been a fan of "fantasy" books...Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, etc. With regards to the Harry Potter phenomenon, I would shake my head in disgust at the mania surrounding the latest book or movie release.
And now? Well, I can hardly wait until Friday for the "New Moon" film to be released. I think Mike is getting sick of my watching the trailers over and over and over again. And with each sneak peek that's released...hoo boy! I'm like a 13 year old, bouncing around the kitchen with glee, clapping my hands together and squealing. Each time I watch the clips, I just get more and more excited.
I watched the Twilight movie awhile ago, not expecting to like it. I just wanted to see what the fuss was all about. Two words...Edward Cullen. He's played by Robert Pattinson and I'm surprised that I don't have a crush on Robert. But it's Edward that I'm in love with. I don't even think Robert and Edward look alike...Edward is just so much more refined and polished than Robert is.
After watching the movie, I just HAD to read "New Moon". I think I ripped through the three books within a week...I just could not put them down. They aren't literary masterpieces...I even found myself cringing at some of the author's word choices or use of descriptions. But it was the storyline that sucked me in and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. When I finally did finish the last book, it was like saying good-bye to a friendship. I felt lost without the books. But now I'm excited to see how the director will bring the words to the screen.
My last big obsession was over the "Titanic" movie (I can't believe it's been 12 years already!!). At the ripe old age of 30, I should not be scouring through the poster bin or oogling over the "Official Twilight Fanbook" with the other 13 year olds. But I have been. And I love it.
I'm just glad that I have Joel to slough this off on...his room has been slowly filling up with Edward and Twilight posters. Thanks for letting me subject you to my obsesion, Jo-Jo :-)
or her own, I should say.
ReplyDeleteI shake my head in disgust at your shaking your head in disgust at the mania surrounding the latest Harry Potter release.
ReplyDeleteI was actually dubious about HP myself for many years, mostly because I thought it was unduly drawing the attention of a new reading generation away from the Lord of the Rings.
Then Dixie read the first book and said it was great. So eventually I read the first book, and then the second and I was quickly sucked into the story line: is Harry who we think he is? Will Snape be a good guy or a bad guy? Is Dumbledore really dead? Etc. It was gripping.
But to each his own, I guess.
I guess I should have clarified that I now understand the mania around the HP book releases (even though I have yet to read the books). And I'm not knocking any of the books/series I listed (how can I if I haven't read any of them?). I just didn't understand the hype and the anticipation for the next book release. Perhaps it was because I didn't have to wait for my next Twilight book like HP fans had to wait for theirs.
ReplyDeleteIf you guys were still in PA, I'd be asking to borrow your LOTR books :-)
I haven't read any of the aforementioned series either. The last time I got all giddy & impatient was after season two of "The Office". When Jim kissed Pam and she was still engaged and I had to wait ALL.SUMMER. to see what happened, if she liked him back, ugh, I could hardly stand it!!!! I was searching all over the internet to try and find spoilers! I would even dream about it, it was stupid. (I guess crazy dreams comes from sleep deprivation -- babies - so that's where that came from.) My friends thought I was crazy, I was like "isn't the suspense killing you?!?!?"
ReplyDeletelove it love it love it!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI was like you too; I refused to read the books or buy into the hype. Then my friend got me a copy of Twilight for my birthday - I started reading it before bed one night, and I was done before bed the next night! I bought the other three and read them all in a row within a week and a half. I'm so glad I didn't start reading them when they first came out, because then I would have had to wait in agony for the next book release! But I agree with you about the writing, pretty cringe-worthy sometimes, and I also don't get what all the fuss is about regarding R Patz. But I am going to the movie on Saturday with a friend of mine who loves them just as much as me! Yay!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I found this on Stephanie Meyers' website: it's written by her, and it's Twilight re-written from Edwards point of view! Pretty awesome! Enjoy!

I love discussing Twilight with my grade 7's....they make it so easy to revert back to a giddy teenager!
ReplyDeleteI remember the days, or should i say weeks or months, that you spent going to Titanic. What was the final count 30 something times to the theatre?
ReplyDeleteLOL! It was only 10 times in a row...every Sunday night for 2.5 months straight!
ReplyDeleteWhen I told my parents about my new obsession with Twilight, my dad piped up that if I'm going to print off the script this time that I am to do it on my own computer!
