Five Months Old, Part Two

Dear Miss Katelyn,

You turned the big five twelfths on Saturday.  I am amazed each day at how much you grow (you are tipping the scales at 16 lbs, 10 oz!), how much you change and how much you learn.  Before you, I honestly kind of thought babies were boring until they could talk.  After all, how much fun could a grunting, drooling, crying little person be?  But watching you discover your hands and all they are capable of doing and grabbing is absolutely amazing.  Each time you sit in your exersaucer, you're able to reach just a little bit further.  And every time you lay on your belly, you push yourself up just a little bit higher.

I love that she sort of looks like a 1920s bathing beauty here :-)

You haven't quite mastered the rolling over yet, but you are oh-so very close. You roll from your front to back if you have enough momentum to start with, but back to front is still a work in progress.

You LOVE to be in just a diaper and kicking around.  You also just discovered your feet.

Your smile grows bigger and bigger each day. From the moment you wake up, to the instant you close your eyes for the night, you are rarely without a smile. And what a smile it is :-)

You are an absolute joy to dress up. And you do a great job of indulging me by laying in your crib and cooing/babbling while I change your outfit from one to the next. It's gotten to the point where you get a new set of clothes with almost every diaper change :-)

Five months: painted toes.  Six months: tattoos.

Something that everybody agrees on is that you are a very expressive baby.  You work your little eyebrows so they match whatever you are babbling about.  The more excited you get, the higher up they go.  When you are working hard to reach for something, they furrow together with such intensity, they almost touch.  And, of course, there's your tongue.  You love to stick it out and blow raspberries until your shirt is soaked.  And then we go change your outfit :-)

You are so curious about the world around you.  I have a feeling you are going to be a bit of an adventurer/explorer.

Diaper changes are getting to be a bit tougher since you like to emulate a windmill when you're naked.  You whip your arms back and forth and kick kick kick with all your might.  You are happy while doing this, so at least the changes are entertaining for both of us.

You continue to sleep through the night like an angel.  If you wake up for some reason, all it takes is a reswaddling and you fall back asleep.  You are averaging about 10 hours a night.  It is rare that you are awake before 9:30am.  Is it wrong that I miss those 5 AM mornings when it was just you and I?

My most favourite part of the day with you is cuddling in the glider.  Always has been, always will be.  You are calm and content and you peer up at me with your beautiful blue eyes and I just melt.  No matter what kind of day I'm having, you make it all worth it.

Thank you for being the wonderful baby you are.  I can't wait to see what the next month brings :-)

Love Mommy

  1. What a beautiful creature! And a rare one...if she sleeps 10 hours at five months! She really does look so special... And you certainly are a special mom, no wonder she is so "ahead"!

  2. *melting here!* Seriously with the 2nd last picture? I mean, come on with those eyes! I really think it's neat that the girls are so close in age to see the similarities - because I realized that 5 months was when I thought Ellie looked a lot more like a baby and less a newborn. It was like a switch went off and it appears to be the same with Katelyn. What a lovely post.

Carla would also like to connect with you :) You could use our email address info@thesmilingmask.com if you're into reconnecting!

  5. NJY: yes, yes it is :-)

Valeria: Thank you...your compliments mean so very much to me :-)

Nikki: I love the fact that we can compare notes on the girls' development too!

Anonymous: I use a Pentax DSLR. My secret to getting a gorgeous pic? I have to snap well over 100 photos to get "the one" :-) I am super content being a mother and I definitely hope to have more kids. I just hope they are as content as Katelyn :-)

Elita: I am so happy that I had the chance to talk with you and Tania privately. Like I said, my gut was leading me to BP's even though I wasn't 100% why. Thank you so much for the insight and tools you both gave me. I didn't do the "burning ceremony" yet, but I definitely plan to. And I am also definitely up for reconnecting (and connecting with Carla). I will email very soon!
