It is no secret in this household that my latest obsession is with DrawSomething (henceforth referred to as DS because I'm too lazy to type the whole thing out each time). DS is an app that's available on iPhone, iPad or Android phones. I discovered it just over two weeks ago and have been playing pretty much non-stop ever since. Because some of you out there know that I refuse to have a decent cellphone, I should let you know that I play on the iPad, NOT a phone :)
DS starts off by matching you up with an opponent (you can find your friends or be randomly hooked up). It is similar to Pictionary in that you are given a choice of three possible words to draw (ranging from easy to difficult). You sketch a quick picture and send the drawing to your opponent. At his/her leisure, your opponent clicks Play and gets to watch you draw your pic in, more or less, real time. They get to see your mistakes, erasings and goofy attempts. To make the guessing a tad easier, your opponent gets to see how many letters are in the word you're drawing PLUS are given a group of letters to create said word. Clear as mud? Good.
I don't know if I can pinpoint any one reason why I love this game so much. Part of it is because of the creativity it requires. How does one draw "wonder"? Well, you do your best attempt at drawing a blind black man playing the keyboard :) Another reason I love it is because I'm a word nerd. Before my opponent even starts drawing, I'm focused on the letters and trying to guess all the possible words it might be. If any of my opponents are reading this, my apologies if it takes away from the fun of watching your drawing come up and I've guessed the word before you even get two strokes in :)
An interesting offshoot has been happening with a few of my opponents (whom are total strangers and random hook ups for me...that sounds kind of slutty, but whatevs)...we've began (begun?) to chat before we draw. We scribble a short note, complimenting each other on our "amazing" drawing skills and then that note gets "thrown in the trash" and then we draw. One woman and I have been sharing small details about our lives...where we live, what we do, kids etc. I find it quite interesting how total strangers can connect :)
I have a few personal "rules" that I expect my opponents to stick to or they get deleted from my game list. The rules are as follows:
1) If you simply write out the word, that's cheating and I won't play with you. There have been a few times where I've been super stuck and not known how to draw something (what the hell is a koopa anyways?!?) and scribbled a note to my opponent, apologizing and then giving them the word. To me, that's different then just being plain lazy.
2) Utilize your colours. Initially, you're only given a couple of basic colours to choose from...do the best you can with what you have and save up your coins to buy new pallets and then USE THEM. I've played a few rounds with an opponent and ALL they wanted to do was draw shitty black stick figures that all looked exactly the same to me. Delete. Buh-bye!
3) You don't have to be a good drawer to play, but I do expect some effort. If the word you're given is "Shrek", at least make a half-hearted attempt to recreate the guy. Or write "Disney movie" as a clue. Something. Anything. I had one ass-twat draw a black f@#king cat for Shrek...WTH, you retard? Another wingnut drew a skinny stick with a red circle on top. Methought it was a lollipop, but the correct word only had four letter spaces. "I'm sorry, but the answer we are looking for here is...rose. Rose". I promptly deleted that player.
So, all that to say...who wants to play DrawSomething with me?!? Don't I sound like a fun, whimsical, relaxed opponent? :) Seriously though, my screen name is jtaves79. Give it a whirl....I promise you'll be just as hooked as I am :)
I also am addicted to DS. I had only played on my iphone but then left it at my sister's place so used my ipad and greg's DS game. It's amazing how much nicer it is on an ipad than the iphone!!!! i love your drawings and the creative way you go to show something that could be done much easier!! I apologize that I am not as creative as most!!
ReplyDeleteI recently had to draw the word fart (well I had to choose the word fart....because who doesn't want to draw a fart?!). And I was pretty proud of the green cloud of gas escaping from a beautifully drawn butt....haha I do well sometimes, but feel like I would do better with a stylus since I am drawing on an iPod touch.
ReplyDeleteYou are a great artist and a good guesser too, because my statue of liberty that I drew for New York was not a masterpiece and you got it :)
Becky: I love your drawings! Don't think that you're not creative!! And I have no clue how I would even attempt to draw on an iPhone!
ReplyDeleteAngie: Fart hasn't been a choice for me yet, but boy oh boy...I can't wait until it is LOL. With the guessing, like I said..I love words and letters and am guessing before the drawing even starts :)
Now it is my goal to draw pictures that keep you guessing until the end. How cryptic can I be?!
ReplyDeleteLOL...one friend drew a beautiful meadow scene with trees, flowers, birds and a rainbow...very detailed and time-consuming. At the end, she wrote "that black basketball player, James". It truly had me stumped LMAO
ReplyDeleteOfficially hooked! Like embarrassingly.

Awesome! Or should I say, "Drawsome" ;) Thanks for letting me know who you are, Kara :)
